How to Build an Online Course Website with Tutor LMS (Full Project Walkthrough)

This is the walkthrough we wish every new course creator had: the full path from an idea to a live Tutor LMS website, in the order that avoids rework. Each step links to a detailed guide.

Phase 1: Plan

Define the offer

Which courses, for whom, at what price, sold how (single courses, bundles, subscriptions, memberships)? Write it down. These answers decide your eCommerce engine and whether you need Tutor LMS Pro.

Map features to Free and Pro

Certificates, assignments, content drip, subscriptions, bundles, Stripe in native checkout and live classes are Pro features. See Free vs Pro.

Plan the pages

Home, course catalogue, course pages, about, contact, FAQ, terms and privacy, plus the Tutor LMS pages: dashboard, registration, cart and checkout.

Phase 2: Foundations

  • Hosting built for logged-in users, with PHP 8, object caching and backups. See hosting for Tutor LMS.
  • Domain and HTTPS.
  • A staging site for building and later for testing updates.
  • A theme that styles Tutor LMS pages well. See themes for Tutor LMS.

Phase 3: Install and configure Tutor LMS

  1. Install Tutor LMS (and Pro), and complete the onboarding.
  2. Choose the learning mode and theme under Settings > Design.
  3. Choose the eCommerce engine under Settings > Monetization. See monetization options.
  4. Configure course, lesson, quiz and video settings. See the settings walkthrough.
  5. Enable the Pro add-ons you need, and only those.

Phase 4: Build the courses

  1. Create the course with a strong description and overview fields.
  2. Add topics and lessons, with videos hosted properly.
  3. Add quizzes at the end of topics.
  4. Set up certificates (Pro) and free lesson previews (Pro).
  5. Set prices, sale prices and coupons.

Phase 5: Payments and emails

  • Configure payment gateways and test them in sandbox mode. See PayPal and Stripe.
  • Set up tax if you need to collect it.
  • Connect an SMTP service so emails reach inboxes. With Pro, configure the Email add-on.
  • Connect your email marketing tool to enrollment events.

Phase 6: Design and content

  • Design the home page around your best course and a clear call to action.
  • Configure the course archive under Settings > Design > Course (columns, filters, sorting).
  • Choose which elements show on course pages under Settings > Design > Course Details.
  • Write the about, FAQ and legal pages.

Phase 7: SEO and performance

  • Pretty permalinks and clean course slugs.
  • An SEO plugin for titles, descriptions and sitemaps; Tutor LMS 4 notes improved compatibility with Yoast SEO and Rank Math.
  • WebP images, a light theme and caching that excludes the dashboard, learning area, cart and checkout.

See SEO for Tutor LMS courses and speeding up Tutor LMS.

Phase 8: Test everything

Run through the student journey on desktop and mobile: register, buy with each payment method, enroll, learn, complete lessons, pass quizzes, get a certificate, receive emails. Then the instructor journey. Fix everything on staging.

Phase 9: Launch

  • Delete sample courses and test data (including test orders).
  • Switch gateways from sandbox to live keys and run one real low-value purchase.
  • Submit your sitemap to Google Search Console.
  • Set up uptime monitoring and backups.

Phase 10: After launch

  • Watch analytics and support messages for the first weeks.
  • Update Tutor LMS and Pro together, on staging first.
  • Improve course pages based on what visitors ask.

Frequently asked questions
