The problem

API challenges we solve

Tutor LMS has a REST API under the tutor/v1 namespace. The free plugin exposes read endpoints for courses, topics, lessons, quizzes, quiz attempts, author information, ratings, announcements and course contents. Tutor LMS Pro adds write endpoints: create, update and delete courses, topics, lessons, quizzes, questions and assignments, manage enrollments, mark lessons and courses complete, record quiz attempts, and manage Q&A, reviews, wishlists and student profiles.

We use this API to connect Tutor LMS to mobile apps, external portals, CRMs and HR systems, and we build custom endpoints for data or actions the built-in API does not cover.

  • Read-only on the free plugin

Creating enrollments or courses through the API needs Pro or custom endpoints.

  • Authentication setup

API keys, secrets and permissions must be configured and stored safely.

  • Missing data

Reports, custom fields or progress details may need endpoints of their own.

  • Performance at scale

Apps that poll the API heavily can slow down the site for everyone.

What we do

API work we do

We design the integration, use the built-in endpoints where they fit, add secure custom endpoints where they do not, and document everything for your app or integration team.

API integration

Your app or system connected to the Tutor LMS endpoints.

Custom endpoints

New routes registered alongside tutor/v1 with proper permission checks.

Authentication

Tutor LMS API keys, application passwords or token-based auth.

Webhooks out

Events such as enrollments and completions pushed to your systems.

Headless front ends

Course catalogues and learning screens in React or Next.js.

Documentation

Endpoint reference and examples for your developers.

Typical projects

API projects

01

Mobile app backend

A mobile app for students using the API for catalogue, progress and quizzes.

02

HR system enrollments

New employees enrolled automatically when they are added in the HR system.

03

External portal

A partner portal showing each client's training progress.

04

Data warehouse sync

Nightly export of enrollments, progress and results.

In depth

Inside the Tutor LMS REST API

Authentication

Tutor LMS generates API key and secret pairs per user from its settings, stores them in user meta, and accepts them as HTTP Basic credentials on its API routes. Each key has a permission level (read or read/write). Keys must be kept server-side, never in a mobile app bundle or browser code, and rotated if exposed.

Free and Pro endpoints

Free endpoints are read-only: /courses, /courses/{id}, /topics, /lessons, /quizzes, /quiz-attempt-details/{id}, /course-contents/{id} and others. Pro registers write endpoints such as /enrollments, /lesson-mark-complete, /course-mark-complete and /quiz-attempts, plus endpoints for students, profiles, Q&A, reviews and wishlists.

Custom endpoints

When an integration needs something the API does not offer, such as a report or a custom field, we register a route with register_rest_route, a strict permission callback and validated parameters, using Tutor LMS functions rather than raw SQL where possible. See our REST API guides.

Process

How API projects run

  1. 1

    Integration design

Data flows, triggers and who calls whom.

  2. 2

    Endpoint mapping

Built-in endpoints used where possible, custom ones specified.

  3. 3

    Build

Endpoints, auth and webhooks developed and tested.

  4. 4

    Integration testing

Tested with your app or system in a staging environment.

  5. 5

    Documentation

Endpoint docs and examples handed over.

Deliverables

What you walk away with

  • A working API integration
  • Custom endpoints with permission checks
  • Endpoint documentation and examples
  • Security review of keys and access
FAQ

Questions about the Tutor LMS API

Can we enroll students through the API?
With Tutor LMS Pro, yes, through the enrollments endpoint. On the free plugin we build a custom endpoint that uses Tutor LMS enrollment functions.
Is the API secure?
It uses key and secret pairs with permission levels. Security depends on keeping secrets server-side, using HTTPS and limiting permissions, which we set up.
