The problem

Where memberships go wrong

Memberships turn one-off course sales into recurring revenue, but they add moving parts: plans, renewals, failed payments, upgrades, cancellations and trials. Each of those must change course access correctly, or you either lose money or frustrate paying members.

Tutor LMS supports several approaches. Tutor LMS Pro has its own Subscription add-on with plans, recurring intervals and trials, and add-ons for Paid Memberships Pro, Restrict Content Pro and WooCommerce Subscriptions. Other membership plugins can be connected with custom code. We help you choose and set it up so access always matches payment.

  • Access after cancellation

Members who stopped paying keep access, or paying members lose it after a failed renewal retry.

  • The wrong plugin for the model

Some membership tools suit content restriction, others suit course access. Mixing them causes conflicts.

  • Trials and upgrades

Trials, plan changes and proration need clear rules.

  • Reporting recurring revenue

Churn and active members are hard to see.

What we do

What we set up

We recommend the right membership approach, configure plans and access rules, and test the full lifecycle: sign-up, trial, renewal, failure, upgrade and cancellation.

Tutor LMS Pro subscriptions

Plans with recurring intervals, trials and trial fees in native eCommerce.

Paid Memberships Pro

Membership levels mapped to course access with the Pro add-on.

Restrict Content Pro

Content and course access by membership level.

WooCommerce Subscriptions

Recurring products with access tied to subscription status.

Other membership plugins

MemberPress and others connected through custom integration code.

All-access passes

One plan for the whole catalogue or a category.

Typical projects

Membership models

01

Monthly all-access membership

One subscription unlocks every course; cancellation removes access at the end of the period.

02

Tiered memberships

Basic, Plus and Pro levels each unlocking a different set of courses.

03

Free trial to paid

A seven-day trial with a small trial fee, converting to a monthly plan.

04

Course plus community

A membership that combines courses with a private community.

In depth

Membership options in Tutor LMS

Native subscriptions in Tutor LMS Pro

The Pro Subscription add-on stores plans, plan items, subscriptions and their meta in its own tables. Plans define a payment type, a plan type, a recurring interval and optional trial settings (trial value, interval and fee). Subscription orders are linked to their parent subscription in the native order tables, so renewals and access stay connected.

Membership plugin add-ons

When monetization is set to Paid Memberships Pro or Restrict Content Pro (with the Pro add-on enabled), course access follows membership levels. The WooCommerce Subscriptions add-on ties access to subscription status and shows the subscription expiry for enrollments. Each approach has trade-offs in checkout, gateways and reporting, which we explain in our selling guides.

Testing the lifecycle

We test every state a member can be in: new, trialing, active, renewed, failed, retried, upgraded, downgraded, cancelled and expired, and check course access at each step.

Process

How we build it

  1. 1

    Model design

Plans, prices, what each plan unlocks and the rules for changes.

  2. 2

    Platform choice

Pro subscriptions or a membership plugin, based on your needs.

  3. 3

    Configuration

Plans, access rules, gateways and emails on staging.

  4. 4

    Lifecycle testing

Every member state tested with test payments.

  5. 5

    Launch

Go-live and monitoring of the first renewals.

FAQ

Questions about memberships

Do we need Tutor LMS Pro for memberships?
For the native Subscription add-on and the PMPro, RCP and WooCommerce Subscriptions add-ons, yes. Other membership plugins can sometimes be integrated with custom code on the free plugin.
Can members keep their progress if they cancel and return?
Yes. Progress is stored separately from access, so a returning member continues where they left off.
