Tutor LMS database optimization

Tutor LMS database optimization for large and growing sites

Years of quiz attempts, orders, progress and logs slow a site down. We find the slow queries, clean up safely and add the indexes and summary tables your data needs.

  • Safe cleanup with backups
  • Indexes based on real queries
  • Faster reports and dashboards

The problem

Signs your database needs attention

Tutor LMS stores data in WordPress tables and in its own. Courses, lessons, quizzes and enrollments are posts. Lesson progress is user meta, course completion a comment, and quiz attempts, answers, orders, coupons, carts, earnings, withdrawals and more live in custom tables. As a site grows, these tables grow too, and queries that were instant with a hundred students slow down with fifty thousand.

Database optimization is careful work. We measure which queries are slow, clean up only what is safe to remove, add indexes where they help, and build summary tables for heavy reports.

  • Slow dashboards and reports

Student and instructor dashboards that take seconds to load.

  • Bloated tables

Large wp_options autoload, expired transients, old revisions and logs.

  • Slow admin lists

Quiz attempt, order and enrollment lists that time out.

  • Backups that take hours

A database so large that backups and migrations are painful.

What we do

What we optimize

We analyse the database, profile real queries, and apply changes on staging first: cleanup, indexes, configuration and, where needed, summary tables maintained by Tutor LMS events.

Query profiling

Slow query log and Query Monitor to find the real problems.

Safe cleanup

Transients, revisions, spam and orphaned meta removed with backups.

Indexes

Indexes added for queries your site actually runs.

Autoload tuning

Large autoloaded options reduced.

Summary tables

Pre-computed progress and report data for large sites.

Server settings

MySQL or MariaDB buffers and limits tuned for your data.

Typical projects

Database projects

01

Slow quiz attempt list

Admin list queries on quiz attempts improved for a site with hundreds of thousands of attempts.

02

Old test data

Test orders and enrollments from development removed safely, respecting foreign keys.

03

Progress reports for managers

A summary table updated on lesson and course completion events.

04

Migration preparation

A clean, smaller database before moving hosts.

In depth

The Tutor LMS data model

Know the tables

Tutor LMS core creates tables for quizzes (tutor_quiz_questions, tutor_quiz_question_answers, tutor_quiz_attempts, tutor_quiz_attempt_answers), revenue sharing (tutor_earnings, tutor_withdraws), native eCommerce (tutor_orders, tutor_ordermeta, tutor_order_items, coupons, carts and customers), the Gradebook, an email queue, a scheduler and GDPR consent logs. Pro adds subscription, notification, content bank and H5P tables.

Respect the relationships

The native eCommerce tables use foreign keys with cascading deletes: removing an order removes its meta and items. That is convenient, but it means cleanup must be deliberate. We never delete rows without understanding what depends on them, and we always back up first.

Progress data

Lesson completion is stored as user meta per lesson and course completion as comments of type course_completed. Aggregating these for thousands of students is where reports slow down, and where summary tables help most. See our database guides.

Process

How we work on your database

  1. 1

    Backup and copy

A full backup and a staging copy for analysis.

  2. 2

    Analyse

Table sizes, slow queries and autoloaded data.

  3. 3

    Plan

Cleanup and index changes listed for approval.

  4. 4

    Apply on staging

Changes tested against the site's flows.

  5. 5

    Apply on live

In a quiet window, with a rollback plan.

Deliverables

What you walk away with

  • A database health report
  • Faster queries and smaller tables
  • Documented indexes and cleanup
  • Summary tables where they pay off
FAQ

Questions about database optimization

Is it safe to delete old quiz attempts?
Only if you no longer need them for grades, certificates or audits. We agree retention rules with you first and back up before deleting.
Will adding indexes affect Tutor LMS updates?
Indexes do not change data. We document them so they can be checked if a future update changes a table.
