How to Speed Up a Tutor LMS Website: The Complete Guide

A slow learning site loses buyers on the course page and frustrates students in every lesson. Tutor LMS sites are slower than typical WordPress sites for one main reason: most of the important pages are viewed by logged-in users, and those pages are built fresh on every request. This guide explains where the time goes and what to do about it.

Two kinds of speed

  • Public pages (home, course catalogue, course pages, blog) are seen by visitors and by Google. They can be page-cached and must pass Core Web Vitals: LCP of 2.5 seconds or less, INP of 200 milliseconds or less, CLS of 0.1 or less.
  • Logged-in pages (dashboard, learning area, quizzes, cart and checkout) depend on the user and run PHP and database queries every time.

Measure both. Use PageSpeed Insights for public pages, and time a lesson and the dashboard while logged in as a test student.

1. Hosting matters more than usual

Because logged-in pages cannot be page-cached, server speed decides how fast they load and how many students can use the site at once. Look for current PHP 8, enough PHP workers for your peak, OPcache, fast storage and a database that is not overloaded. See hosting for Tutor LMS.

2. Add a persistent object cache

An object cache such as Redis or Memcached keeps the results of repeated database queries in memory, which helps logged-in pages most. Many hosts offer Redis; enable it with a WordPress object cache plugin.

3. Page-cache public pages, never personal ones

Cache the home page, course archive and course pages for visitors. Exclude pages that show user-specific content:

  • the Tutor LMS dashboard page (set under Settings > General);
  • lessons, quizzes and assignments (the learning area);
  • cart and checkout pages for native eCommerce, or WooCommerce cart, checkout and account pages;
  • login and registration pages.

Caching these can show one student another's data or deliver expired security nonces, which breaks quiz submission and lesson completion. Most caching plugins skip pages for logged-in users by default; make sure that is on. See caching exclusions for Tutor LMS.

4. Choose a lighter theme and fewer plugins

Heavy themes and page builders load large CSS and JavaScript files on every page, including lessons. A theme designed for Tutor LMS, with page builder layouts limited to marketing pages, is usually much faster. Remove plugins you do not use, and disable Tutor LMS Pro add-ons you do not need.

5. Host video properly

Tutor LMS lessons can use HTML5 (self-hosted), YouTube, Vimeo, external URLs, embed codes or shortcodes as the video source. Self-hosted video files are large and put load on your server. A video host with adaptive streaming loads faster on mobile. Under Settings > Course > Video you can choose the preferred sources and whether to use the Tutor player for YouTube and Vimeo.

6. Optimize images

  • Use WebP and the right dimensions for course thumbnails.
  • Set width and height on images to avoid layout shifts.
  • Lazy-load images below the fold, but not the main image at the top of the page.

7. Reduce third-party scripts

Chat widgets, tracking pixels and font services add requests and slow interactions. Load them only where needed, delay them until user interaction, or self-host fonts.

8. Keep the database healthy

Large sites accumulate quiz attempts, orders, expired transients and autoloaded options. Clean what is safe to clean, and check slow queries with Query Monitor. Tutor LMS has an email queue and a scheduler table for background tasks; on busy sites, run WordPress cron from a real server cron job. See optimizing the Tutor LMS database.

9. Keep everything updated

Newer PHP versions are faster, and plugin updates often include performance fixes. Update Tutor LMS and Pro together, on staging first.

A quick checklist

  • PHP 8.x with OPcache
  • Redis or Memcached object cache
  • Page cache for public pages, with Tutor LMS exclusions
  • A lightweight theme; builder layouts only on marketing pages
  • Video on YouTube, Vimeo or a dedicated host
  • WebP images with dimensions
  • Few third-party scripts, loaded late
  • Real cron for background tasks

Frequently asked questions

Why is my dashboard slow when the home page is fast?

The home page comes from the page cache; the dashboard is built for each student. Server speed, object caching and query efficiency decide dashboard speed.

Can I get a 100 PageSpeed score with Tutor LMS?

On public pages it is possible with a light theme, optimized images and few scripts. Focus on passing Core Web Vitals rather than one number.
