Speeding up Tutor LMS without breaking it
Measure first
We test the home page, course archive, a course page, a lesson and the dashboard on mobile, logged out and logged in. Lighthouse shows lab data; PageSpeed Insights and real-user monitoring show field data. The goal is LCP under 2.5 seconds, INP under 200 milliseconds and CLS under 0.1, the thresholds Google uses for a good experience.
Caching that respects an LMS
Public course pages can be cached for visitors. Pages that depend on the user cannot: the Tutor LMS dashboard, cart, checkout and the learning area. Caching them can show one student another student's data. We configure exclusions for these pages and test them. Our guide to caching Tutor LMS lists the pages to exclude.
Video
Tutor LMS lessons support several video sources: HTML5 (self-hosted), YouTube, Vimeo, external URLs, embedded players and shortcodes. Self-hosted video files are heavy for your server; a dedicated video host usually loads faster and adds adaptive streaming.
Assets and builders
Themes and page builders often load all of their styles and scripts on every page. We remove what is not used, load the rest only where needed, defer scripts and inline critical CSS. Images become WebP with correct dimensions so nothing shifts while loading.
