The problem

Security risks on an LMS

Learning sites are attractive targets. They have many user accounts, open registration forms, file uploads for assignments, an API, and paid content people would rather share than buy. A security plugin alone does not cover these risks, and an overly strict one can block quiz submissions and checkout.

We review the security of your Tutor LMS site as a whole: WordPress and server configuration, user roles and logins, forms and uploads, API keys, payment flows and content access. Then we fix the issues in order of risk, without breaking the learning experience.

  • Spam registrations

Bots creating student and instructor accounts by the thousand.

  • Account sharing

One paid login used by many people.

  • Exposed API keys

REST API secrets in front-end code or shared documents.

  • Outdated plugins

Known vulnerabilities in plugins that were never updated.

What we do

What we secure

We audit, report risks by priority, fix them and leave you with a configuration that is secure and still lets students learn and pay.

Security audit

WordPress, plugins, server, users, forms, uploads and API reviewed.

Login protection

Rate limiting, two-factor for admins and instructors, strong passwords.

Registration spam

CAPTCHA or honeypots on Tutor LMS registration and login forms.

Account sharing limits

Concurrent login limits and session controls.

Content protection

Private video hosting, domain restrictions and download controls.

Incident response

Malware cleanup, credential resets and hardening after a breach.

In depth

Tutor LMS-specific security points

Roles and capabilities

Tutor LMS adds an instructor role (tutor_instructor by default) with access to course creation. Instructor registration can be open, approved by an admin or disabled. We review who can become an instructor and what they can upload or publish.

The REST API

Tutor LMS API keys are generated per user with a permission level and checked as HTTP Basic credentials. Keys must stay server-side, use read-only permission where possible and be revoked when no longer needed. Recent Tutor LMS releases included REST API security improvements, another reason to stay updated.

Uploads

Assignments (Pro) let students upload files. We check allowed file types and sizes, where files are stored and whether they can be executed or browsed.

Privacy

Tutor LMS 4 added GDPR features including consent records. We help configure them and data export and erasure for students. See our security guides.

FAQ

Questions about LMS security

Will security plugins break Tutor LMS?
They can, for example by blocking AJAX requests used by quizzes. We configure them with the exceptions an LMS needs and test afterwards.
Can you stop students sharing accounts?
We can limit concurrent sessions and make sharing inconvenient. No method is perfect, but it reduces sharing significantly.
