How Tutor LMS templates work
The template loader
When Tutor LMS renders a template, its loader first looks in the child theme for tutor/{template}.php, then in the parent theme, and only then falls back to the plugin's own templates folder. That means any of its templates can be replaced from your theme without touching the plugin. The folder name itself is filterable through tutor_template_path. Our guide to template overrides explains the details.
Override as little as possible
An override is a copy that you now maintain. Every time Tutor LMS changes the original, the copy falls behind. So we change appearance with CSS first, use filters and actions to add or move content second, and override a template only when the markup must change. Each override is listed with the Tutor LMS version it was copied from, so updates can be compared quickly.
Learning modes and dark mode
Tutor LMS 4 offers Modern, Kids and Legacy learning modes for the learning experience, with light and dark themes and accessibility preferences for students. A theme should respect these choices instead of fighting them. We test your design in the modes you enable.
Speed
Course and dashboard pages are mostly viewed by logged-in students, so they are not served from a page cache. A heavy theme hurts here most. We keep CSS and JavaScript small, load scripts only where they are needed and size images properly, which shows up directly in Core Web Vitals.
