Tutor LMS Free vs Pro: What You Actually Get in Version 4

Is the free Tutor LMS plugin enough, or do you need Tutor LMS Pro? The honest answer depends on what you teach and how you sell. This comparison is based on the source code of Tutor LMS 4.1.3 and Tutor LMS Pro 4.1.3, not on marketing pages, so you can see exactly where the line falls.

The short answer

The free plugin is a complete LMS for selling or giving away courses with lessons, videos and basic quizzes, and it includes a native checkout with PayPal. You need Pro when you want any of these: certificates, assignments, content drip, prerequisites, more quiz types, Stripe or other gateways in native checkout, subscriptions, bundles, live classes, or API write access.

When the free plugin is enough

  • You sell a handful of courses with PayPal, or through WooCommerce with its own gateways.
  • Your quizzes are simple knowledge checks.
  • You do not need certificates or assignments.
  • Students enroll themselves.

When Pro is worth it

  • You want Stripe or a regional gateway in native checkout.
  • You sell subscriptions or bundles.
  • You issue certificates, grade assignments or need a Gradebook.
  • You release content on a schedule or build learning paths.
  • You run live classes or need integrations such as WPML or BuddyPress.
  • You enroll people manually or connect other systems through the API.

Often one of these alone justifies Pro, because building the same feature yourself costs more than the licence.

One practical note

Tutor LMS Pro is installed alongside the free plugin. It checks that the free plugin is at least the version it was built for; if the free plugin is older, Pro's features do not load. Themeum recommends running the same version of both. Plan updates so both are updated together. See updating Tutor LMS safely.

Frequently asked questions

Can I start free and upgrade later?

Yes. Installing Pro keeps your courses, students and settings and adds the Pro features.

What happens if my Pro licence expires?

Licence terms are set by Themeum, so check their current policy. Usually an expired licence stops updates and support; plan renewals so you can keep core and Pro on matching versions.
