A good quiz tells students whether they understood a topic and tells you where your course needs work. This guide walks through creating a quiz in the Tutor LMS 4 quiz builder, from the first question to testing it as a student.
Step 1: Add a quiz to a topic
Open the course, go to the Curriculum tab, and inside a topic choose Quiz. Give it a title and, optionally, a description shown before the student starts.
Step 2: Add questions
Click Add question and pick a question type. The free plugin offers True/False, Single Choice, Multiple Choice, Open Ended and Fill In The Blanks. Tutor LMS Pro adds Short Answer, Matching, Image Matching, Image Answering, Ordering, Image Marking, Range, Pin, Graph and Puzzle. See every question type explained.
For each question:
- Write the question title and, if useful, a description or image.
- Add answer options and mark the correct one(s).
- Set the mark (points) for the question.
- Add an Answer Explanation that students see when answers are revealed. Explanations turn mistakes into learning.
- Choose whether an answer is required.
Use the question Preview to see it as a student would. With Pro, AI Studio can generate questions from your topics, and you can pull questions from the Content Bank.
Step 3: Configure the quiz settings
- Time Limit: in minutes, hours, days or weeks, or none. You can hide the countdown timer.
- Attempts allowed: 0 means unlimited.
- Passing Grade: the percentage needed to pass.
- Question Order: random, sorted, ascending or descending.
- Maximum questions: draw a set number of questions at random from the pool. Useful for large question banks.
- Layout: single question per screen or all at once, with optional pagination (not in Legacy mode).
- Reveal answers after submission and Hide question number.
- Auto start quiz: begin as soon as the quiz opens.
- Character limits for open-ended and short answers.
- Negative and partial marking (Pro).
Site-wide settings, such as what happens when time runs out and how the final grade is calculated across attempts, live under Settings > Course > Quiz.
Step 4: Save and test
Save the quiz, then log in as a test student enrolled in the course and take it. Check that correct answers score, the passing grade works and the result page makes sense. Then review the attempt under Tutor LMS > Quiz Attempts.
Tips for better quizzes
- Test understanding, not memory. Ask students to apply an idea to a short scenario.
- Write plausible wrong answers. Distractors should reflect common mistakes.
- Use explanations. Every question should explain why the answer is right.
- Keep topic quizzes short. Five to ten questions; save long assessments for the final exam.
- Avoid "all of the above". It makes guessing easier.
