How to Auto-Complete WooCommerce Orders for Courses
Why course orders stay in Processing, how Tutor LMS's auto-complete setting fixes it, what it changes, mixed orders, and how to enroll students who were left waiting.

The most common Tutor LMS WooCommerce support ticket is "I paid but I can't access the course." In most cases the payment worked, but the WooCommerce order is still Processing, and Tutor LMS only completes the enrollment when the order is Completed. This guide explains the setting that fixes it.
Why orders stay in Processing
WooCommerce treats an order as Processing when it is paid but "not yet fulfilled", because it assumes something might need to be shipped. Many gateways set paid orders to Processing. WooCommerce completes orders automatically only in some cases (for example when all items are both virtual and downloadable). Course products are usually just virtual, so they stay in Processing.
Tutor LMS creates a pending enrollment when the order is placed and completes it when the order changes to Completed. Processing means pending, which means no access.
The fix: Automatically Complete WooCommerce Orders
- Go to Tutor LMS > Settings > Monetization > WooCommerce.
- Turn on Automatically Complete WooCommerce Orders. Tutor LMS's description: "If enabled, in the case of Courses, WooCommerce Orders will get the 'Completed' status."
- Optionally turn on Auto Redirect to Courses so buyers land on their enrolled courses after checkout.
- Save.
The setting is stored as tutor_woocommerce_order_auto_complete. It applies to orders for Tutor LMS courses; Tutor LMS checks that the order is a course order before completing it, so other products are not affected.
What about orders with physical products?
If a customer buys a course and a printed book in one order, you may not want the whole order marked Completed before the book ships. Decide on a policy: sell courses and physical items separately, or accept that mixed orders are completed by your team. Test a mixed order on staging to see how your setup behaves.
Fixing students who were left waiting
Turning on the setting affects new orders. For existing orders stuck in Processing:
- Go to WooCommerce > Orders and filter by Processing.
- Check each order is paid (the gateway shows the payment).
- Change the status to Completed. Tutor LMS completes the enrollment.
- Ask one affected student to confirm they now have access.
Changing the status in bulk works too, but check payments first so you do not grant access for failed or fraudulent orders.
Other reasons orders do not complete
- On hold: bank transfer and cheque payments wait for manual confirmation by design.
- Pending payment: the gateway never confirmed the payment. Check its webhook or IPN settings.
- Failed: the payment did not go through.
- A plugin changing statuses: some fulfilment or anti-fraud plugins hold orders for review.
For developers
Tutor LMS hooks into woocommerce_order_status_changed to update enrollments, and provides the filter tutor_should_fire_after_enrolled_for_wc_order to control whether its enrollment actions fire for a given WooCommerce order. Integrations that listen to tutor_after_enrolled receive the event when the enrollment is completed.
Frequently asked questions
Is auto-completing orders safe?
For course-only orders paid through a gateway that confirms payment, yes. Keep fraud checks in your gateway, and monitor refunds.
Does this apply to native eCommerce?
No. Native eCommerce completes enrollment when the payment is confirmed; there is no Processing status to get stuck in.
